Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. Nothing is better than visiting with the familly and friends we rarely have time to see. In all the excitement of the holidays, we can sometimes forget about the impact we have on the environment. This is just a quick blog to remind you how simple it is to travel green on this and any holiday!
Planning your trip:
If you're driving a long distance, evaluate the size of your car and the amount of gas you'll use (check out http://www.costtodrive.com). If you drive something big look into renting a hybrid or lower emissions car. You'll likely save money in the end.
If you're staying in a hotel, look for a green option. Try our hotel search to find Green Scored hotels. We'll show you which hotels are green and the steps they take for the environment.
Consider a carbon offsetting program, you'll likely be surprised by how inexpensive they really are.
Pack Lightly:
The less weight you have in you luggage, the less gas will be used and the less carbon emissions your trip will create. This is true for both air and land travel.
While You're There:
Consider volunteering some time on your trip. Spending even just one day volunteering makes a difference. Contact not-profit organizations in the area and set something up before you go.
When You Get Home:
Write a letter or send an email to the hotel you stayed in, the airline you flew and the rental car company you chose. Thank them for going green or encourage them to do so.
Remember, all you really need to do to make your holiday green is to think about your actions and the effect they would have on the planet if a billion others were doing the same thing. It really is true that every little bit counts. If each of us took just one of these steps, imagine the difference it would make.
