Article by - Taharah-Iman CobbLet's begin by defining a word: Excavation. What does this word mean to you? Dictionaries define it: to make hollow ;to build by carving out ;to engage in removing.Construction companies and builders excavate to create new homesall over the world that are purchased daily on the housing market. This excavation is truly carving out this lush planet every 60 seconds. Do we really want to live on an Earth that is hollow, carved out , where everything natural has been removed? I must ask that before I drink yet another cup of coffee, shampoo my hair, oruse that cream on my face that helps me get a better shave.I have to ask myself, are these products I use worth it?Is preserving my lifestyle worth it?This is how we are currently living and it can be changed.Read on. Where we are NowIn North America and in every other continentHuman excavation and construction are the soledanger for Wild Life and for all natural habitats. What significance does this have for us?Rainforests and other undisturbed places within natureprovide many things used in daily Human life: coffee, chewing gum, soap, conditioner, specialized creamsand lotions (especially facial treatments) including"Organic" products. Our current rate of growth and expansion across thisglobe is quickly eliminating our very source of life.It is as if we are solving our problem of self-destructionby default. Once all of the resources are used.......where will we go? We once believed that the Earth was flat, becausewe had not the experience to teach us the greatertruth. We then believed that we could only travelby boat with painstaking effort, for long periods of time. Now, however, we know that there are many galaxiesother than our own, and we know that we are capableof travelling there if we wish to. Just like we createdplanes and spaceships, we can create even greaterthings. Yes! We can create, but for what? andWhom is this benefiting aside from ourselves? From a psychological / socioeconomical point of viewHumans believe that expansion equals growth. So let's define this just as we have excavation.Growth: to pass into a condition gradually. What exactly have we as a species grown into? Our water is now filtered and then filled with'cleansing chemicals', our soil and beaches areeroding, precious endangered species are dyingoff. Again.....what exactly have we grown into? First let us look at this:New Construction vs. RenovationCompanies who specialize in mass production oron-site construction of homes amass tremendousamounts of income some of which is used to payfor the cost of excavation. This entire operation isfueled by consumers who seemingly still believethat human action is detached from human experience. Here's an example to make that point more clear: I went out yesterday and saw two beautiful homes. One of the homes is an older home, in anolder area. The other home is new and the smallculdesack is expanding quickly into an entireneighborhood. I love the shiny brass light fixtureson the new home. I noticed the fresh brick, the newsod, air tight windows, etc. Yet in the older home Iknow that the opportunity exits there as well tocreate exactly what I want, with more effort. This may be presumptuous to say, but perhapsour eco issues, and dying Wild Life species area result of our perceived need for convenience, speed, and newness. Perhaps it is not that we areunaware. Perhaps it is that some of us chooseto disregard our affect on the lives of generationsof people that will come long after we are gone. You know, "Outta sight, Outta mind, right?"Then, I can only speak for myself. For me, life is new every day.I wake up to a new sunrise, and to newskin cells every day. I don't need a newhome, or a new car, or new shampoo to definethe quality of my life, but I do want those things tobe there all of my life. I want to be free to choose tolive with options and in good health. Yet, I knowthat the only way for this to happen is to change It has been said for lasting change to take effect, onemust first begin with self. From this perspectiveto create global change we must create changewithin our homes........physical change, structural change. The change of a lifetime. Expansion is a beautiful aspect of life.Person by person the entire world can learnto come from a place of broad-mindedness and vision. When we expand as a civilization let it be into new heights ofconscious awareness. Let this broadened awarenessbecome the foundation for the way that we live, and the homes that we live in, the business thatwe build and the structures used for both. Perhaps when we finally learn to adjust to this greatplanet, and embrace its natural perfection, we will findno benefit in hollowing out our environmentto create a home, and maybe......just maybewe'll become more whole ourselves.
